Art 235 - History of Art and Disease

Credit(s): 3
This course will provide an examination of the historic relationship between visual art and disease through assigned readings, lectures, and group discussions. Students will learn how art functions as a cultural document of the societal impacts of disease and psychological disorders in different eras. Renaissance Art and the Black Death will be a major focus for the course, however we will examine a number of instances of the historic correlation between art and disease beginning the with parallel developments of complex art forms and crowd diseases in the Neolithic era, and ending with a look at how artists have approached the subject of disease in the 20th and 21st centuries.
