Pre-Nursing Studies, B.A.

Please note: new Pre-Nursing majors must consult with the Biological and Behavioral Sciences Department before enrollment occurs.

The major in Pre-Nursing provides students with a foundation in human functioning and disease. The curriculum includes all of the prerequisites for entry to most RN/BSN programs, including the Goldfarb School of Nursing (GSon), with which Fontbonne has two + two and four + one articulation agreements.

The major in Pre-Nursing is an ideal curriculum for students planning to enter the healthcare community after graduation. The curriculum is flexible enough to accommodate many healthcare paths and the generous number of elective creates afford students the opportunity to pair the major with a minor or certificate. Suggested partner programs inlcude minors in One Health, Biology, Nutrition, or Psychology; or any of the certifications offered by Fontbonne University’s Social Work program, particularly the Certificates in Gerontology and the Certificate in Health and Mental Health Case Management.

Major Retention for Pre-Nursing

Students seeking the Pre-nursing degree must maintain ad 3.0 cumulative GPA in their science and math courses (see Required Courses in the Major below). Should a cumulative GPA fall below 3.0 in any given semester, students will have one year to raise their Science/Math GPA to a 3.0 or be required to change majors. For transfer students, the grade attained on any transferred courses will be calculated into their Science/Math cumulative GPA for this purpose.

Learning Outcomes


  • Students obtaining a degree in Pre-Nursing Studies from the Biological and Behavioral Sciences Department at Fontbonne University will demonstrate the following by the time they reach the end of their program:  
  • Students will be able to broadly understand the major biological sciences concepts as measured by performance on quantitative assessment quizzes.  
  • Students will identify and acquire valid scientific resources; apply the scientific method to a problem; design an experiment, analyze data, and form a conclusion, as measured by performance on quantitative assessment quizzes.  
  • Demonstrate an understanding of current ethical concerns in nursing-related healthcare as measured by quantitative performance on an assessment quiz.

General Education Requirements


All GER requirements must be met for graduation from Fontbonne University. The following specific general education courses must be chosen to meet the requirements for the Pre-nursing degree. If not specified, then any qualifying course will meet the GER requirements.

Electives


The Pre-nursing program is flexible and designed to meet each student’s needs. During the junior and senior year, students will fill out their schedule with elective courses chosen in conjunction with their faculty advisor (at least six credits of these elective courses must be at the 300- or 400-level).
