University Division

The University Division houses the English as a Second Language Program as well as courses preparing students for college level work, exploring careers, examining the impact of leadership through social change, and emphasizing information literacy.  The University Division is also home to Mission Core I, a cornerstone of Fontbonne’s Culture and the Common Good general education program.

American English Program

Courses in English Language Learning are offered as needed. These courses offer specialized instruction to students learning English as a second language. For purposes of placement, the student will be required to take the ACCUPLACER ESL Test.

These courses can follow a separate fee schedule.

Intensive English Program

The Intensive English Program is designed for non-native speakers of English. The purpose of the program is to help students improve their English language proficiency to a level of competence necessary to function and succeed at Fontbonne and other American universities.

Courses are offered at four levels, low intermediate to advanced, and consist of 20 hours of classroom instruction in English per week. Classes are small, usually 6 to 12 students. Depending on the number of students enrolled in the program, two proficiency levels may be combined.

Placement is determined by the ACCUPLACER ESL Test administered during the first class to determine which level is appropriate for the student. A TOEFL Test score will also be considered.
